I've been playing with clay and sculpting since I was a kid. When I was older and knew I wanted to pursue sculpting for a living, I moved to Los Angeles, enrolled in the Dick Smith's Advanced Professional Make Up Course, and the rest is history!
Do you ever teach classes or do tutorials?
Not yet. There are plans in the near future to partner with Matt Winston of Stan Winston Studios for a class. Stay tuned.
What makes a challenging subject?
People with subtle or none distinctive features are much harder.
Do you use life casts for your sculptures?
No, I start with a crumpled piece of paper and armature wire.
How long does it take to sculpt a bust?
Two to three weeks. Sometimes a more difficult face could take a bit longer, four weeks or so.
What sculpting tools do you use for texture?
I have about 12 different tools that I use for texture, depending on the detail. I don't know the specific name for each one but they range from very open cell foam sponges, to Kemper brand tools.
It's very personal picking out a tool and getting the feel of it in your hand. In the beginning it's a lot of trial and error. It's best to experiment what works for you.
